The problem AP Seminar teachers face

The Performance Task workflow lives in too many places at once. The Course Exam Description is one PDF. The rubrics are another. The annotated bibliography scaffolds are somewhere in Google Drive. Team meeting notes are in Docs, sources are in a spreadsheet, feedback happens in comments, and the teacher's rubric-aware judgment lives in their head. When a student asks "am I on track?" halfway through PT1, the honest answer is "I need to open six tabs to tell you."

Boomerang Projects is a single workspace that holds the whole extended-project process for a class of students — from the first team assignment through the final upload. It is designed for the way AP Seminar actually runs, not for the way generic project-management tools imagine classrooms work.

What the workspace supports

Reverse timelines for PT1 and PT2

PT1 and PT2 each end with a hard College Board deadline. Boomerang Projects builds a reverse timeline from those deadlines back to the first day of the unit, so students see the checkpoints — team formation, source triage, first draft of the IRR, IWA opening, TMP rehearsal — as fixed dates on their own screen, not as reminders from the teacher. Deadlines become visible, not surprising.

Source evaluation with a "why this source" drill

Every source a student adds to their annotated bibliography must answer one question in one sentence: why this source, and not another one, for this claim. That single field, held right next to the source, is the difference between a bibliography of decoration and a bibliography of argument. It maps directly to Row 2 of the IRR rubric.

Team responsibility without ranking students

PT1 is a team task, and every AP Seminar teacher knows the ugly truth: some students carry, some drift, and the individual paper is supposed to reveal who did what. Boomerang Projects makes team contributions visible without turning it into a leaderboard. Each student sees their own timeline, their own decisions, and their own written reflections — the teacher sees the pattern across the team.

Rubric-aware feedback the teacher writes once

Rubric language should live inside the feedback surface, not on a printout the teacher tapes to the wall. When you leave a comment on a student's IRR draft, the workspace shows you which rubric row you're addressing. Students see the same map. Feedback becomes a rubric conversation instead of a pile of hedged suggestions.

Independent teacher judgment, always

The workspace never assigns a score. It never predicts a score. It never nudges the teacher toward one. Every rubric-aware view exists to make the teacher's professional judgment easier to explain to a student, a parent, or a department chair — not to replace it. This is a deliberate design decision, not a limitation.

How Boomerang Projects relates to AP Classroom and the AP Digital Portfolio

Boomerang Projects is independent of the College Board's own systems. Students still submit their finished IRR, IWA, and TMP through the AP Digital Portfolio, on the College Board's timeline, using the College Board's tools. Boomerang Projects is the workspace where the drafting, source evaluation, team collaboration, and rubric-aware feedback happen before the final upload. Think of it as the classroom, not the submission portal.

What the platform deliberately does not do

  • It does not generate student writing. No AI drafting of IRR paragraphs, no auto-summarization of sources into a bibliography entry. The whole point of AP Seminar is the student's thinking.
  • It does not score student work. No predicted scores, no auto-graded rubric rows. Rubric-aware, not rubric-replacing.
  • It does not surveil students. No third-party trackers, no keystroke logging, no behavioral analytics. Privacy is a design principle, not a compliance checkbox.
  • It does not connect to AP Classroom or the AP Digital Portfolio. Those are College Board systems. Boomerang Projects is a separate, independent workspace.

The AP Seminar workflow, week by week

Here is what a typical PT1 unit looks like inside the workspace. Every AP Seminar class runs differently — this is one defensible sequence, not the only one.

  1. Weeks 1–2 · Team formation and problem-framing. Students choose teams, propose research questions, and use the "problem, not topic" rubric row 1 scaffold to convert a topic into a defensible problem.
  2. Weeks 3–4 · The map of the conversation. Each team maps the three or more positions on their problem before selecting sources. Sources are chosen to represent those positions, not gathered at random. This is a Row 2 move.
  3. Weeks 5–6 · Annotated bibliography drafting. Every source entry includes the "why this source" one-sentence drill. Teacher checkpoints happen in the workspace, not on paper.
  4. Weeks 7–8 · IRR drafting. Students draft the Individual Research Report inside the workspace, with the team's shared source pool visible but each student's paper independent. See our annotated IRR example for what a strong draft looks like.
  5. Weeks 9–10 · Team Multimedia Presentation rehearsal. The team assembles the TMP with visible individual roles and a rehearsal log. Feedback happens in the workspace before the live presentation.
  6. Submission week. Students upload their finished IRR and TMP to the AP Digital Portfolio. Boomerang Projects steps back — the College Board owns the submission.
